5 Gift Ideas for Photographers
Hey friends,
As you might have noticed, I didn’t send a newsletter for a couple of weeks. I decided to cut down on their number as it was becoming somewhat of a churn. Not to worry, you’ll still hear from me, just less frequently now.
A few things happened in the meantime. I spent three days in the Italian Dolomites (a beautiful place!), started my series on Scotland, and am currently preparing for the first skiing trip of the season. Fingers crossed, all of it will find its way into the blog eventually!
But today, with the Christmas season quickly approaching and the Black Friday madness almost upon us, I thought I’d share a few ideas on gifts for photographers. If you’re new to the craft or have a friend who’s fond of taking pictures, perhaps you’ll find some of these useful.
As a disclaimer, some of the links are affiliate ones, but all of these are things I use myself and am happy to recommend. With that out of the way, strap in, and let’s get started.
HandyPod
A HandyPod from Joby is essentially a mini tripod and an extremely useful piece of gear. Be that at a venue where security doesn’t allow tripods or a crowded place where setting it up is just not feasible, something as small as a HandyPod can be extremely useful.
Just recently in the Dolomites, I wasn’t bothered to lug my heavy Benro tripod on a lengthy hike. Sure enough, we soon encountered a lake with beautiful reflections and I was biting my elbows I didn’t bring a smaller lighter alternative.
You can even use it for vlogging to either record yourself talking or set up a second camera while you are shooting with your main one. Or capture time-lapses. The list goes on. It’s a super versatile tool that any photographer will be happy to have.
Peak Design Capture Clip
I’ve been using the Capture Clip from Peak Design for years and can’t imagine not having it. If you’re shooting from anywhere further than a parking lot or a dedicated viewpoint, it’s an accessory I highly recommend having.
Capture Clip allows you to easily attach the camera to your belt or your backpack for quick access. No more digging in your bag to get the camera out (while missing a great shot) or carrying it in your hands all the time. With Capture Clip, you’ll be ready to shoot in seconds.
I find it immensely valuable on the hikes, when shooting seascapes, or just anywhere where you need your hands empty. Honestly, if you don’t have one yet, give it a try.
Vallerret Photography Gloves
With winter approaching, it’s important to keep yourself warm while shooting outside. And something to help with that is the Vallerret Photography Gloves. Designed by photographers for photographers, these are, in my opinion, the best photography gloves out there.
I love Vallerret gloves and have been using them ever since I learned about them. They are super comfy, fit well, and are built to last. In winter, they’re simply indispensable.
I have reviewed several Vallerret glove models on my blog, so if you’re interested, check out the reviews here and here. They are all awesome and to any photographer, they will make for a perfect Christmas present.
Merino Wool Layers
Keeping with the winter theme, Merino wool clothing is another thing every landscape photographer will be happy to own. To capture the beauty of winter, one needs to be warm. And when it comes to warmth, not many fabrics can compete with Merino wool.
I’m a huge fan of the Icebreaker line of products. They’re not sponsoring me, but I find their products fantastic. Their Merino hoodie is one of my favorite pieces of clothing whether I’m on a photography trip or not. It’s warm, comfy, looks great, and is highly resistant to odors.
Merino wool isn’t cheap but I do believe it’s worth every penny. So the next time you’re thinking of buying somebody a sweater for Christmas, how about it being a Merino one?
A Trip Somewhere
Last but not least, a trip somewhere is always one of the best gifts for a landscape photographer. There are so many amazing places on Earth that you can never run out of options with this one.
This doesn’t need to be something very expensive. A trip to another country is awesome, but so is a weekend somewhere by the lake or a hike in the mountains. Even a day trip to the National Park or a nearby town. Just use your imagination!

So there you have it. I could go on but this email is getting somewhat lengthy. Plus, I do believe that any one of these will already make for a brilliant gift, either to yourself, your friends, or your partner.
Cheers and happy shopping,
– Alex

Recommendation of the Week
I decided to add this section to my newsletter to recommend something I genuinely liked. This doesn’t necessarily have to do with photography. Rather, I’ll use it for things I found enjoyable.
This week, the honor goes to the Severance. This AppleTV original is one of the best shows I have seen in a long long time. A novel concept, talented cast, amazing story, great cinematography, and incredible attention to detail – the Severance has it all.
I enjoyed it immensely, so if you’re looking for something new to watch, look no further. It’s brilliant.
Sunset Obsession Image of the Week
One of the sunsets from my recent trip to the Dolomites. We were returning from a hike, trying to make our way back before darkness, when the sky suddenly lit up behind us. This wasn’t a planned shot but I think it turned out quite alright.
